Hospital patient information

The project

A large hospital had a web tool for clinicians and staff to access key patient records. Over the years it had grown to include more and more information, becoming confusing and unwieldy. They asked us to both reorganize the tool and make it more æsthetically appealing.

The solution

We reorganized the navigation to provide a consistent left-hand navigation bar built around each user's patient list, and unified navigation of patient information into tabs. We redesigned the interface to provide a more dense display of information, but with a clearer heirarchy of visual elements so that the most important information would be easy to find.

We created a new master summary:

And we reorganized reports so that the list of reports appeared together with the report contents, so that clinicians could confidently march through the list of reports and know that they had seen everything:

Full disclosure: The interface samples you see here were greatly refined by my visual design partner, but the layout of elements and definition of the visual hierarchy is my own work.

What's cool

The reorganization of reports not only solved the problem of the overloaded existing system, it made room in the interface for future reports to be added.

The addition of trend and out-of-range arrows on test results, which you can see in the top illustration, won the widespread enthusiasm of physicians who saw the design.
